Situasi antarabangsa yang semakin stabil dan penubuhan Negeri-Negeri Selat, terutamanya yang melibatkan Pulau Pinang dan Singapura sebagai pusat perdagangan, dinamikan kuasa ekonomi telah mulai menyerap semakin mendalam di Semenanjung Tanah Melayu. Situasi-situasi tersebut telah membawa era baharu di negeri-negeri Melayu. Sementara pada bahagian awal abad ke-19 menzahirkan keadaan pembangunan yang mundur dan ketidakstabilan politik, sebaliknya, pada bahagian awal abad ke-20 menzahirkan berbenihnya modenisasi dan kestabilan politik di negeri-negeri Melayu.
